EDUCATION & CHILD SPONSORSHIP
Education is the primary way the next generation will be free from slavery. HCE has two projects dedicated to this task: Kindergarten (KG) & Sponsorship.
KINDERGARTEN (KG)
This project is a three-year kindergarten program that educates children who are at risk of future enslavement. In addition to education, HCE meets the basic needs of student’s entire family.
Many of the students’ mothers are blind and survive off of begging. These children are able to be educated and prepare for primary school. This program helps end the cycle of poverty in their families by educating the next generation.
There are currently 77 students in KG.
SPONSORSHIP
There are currently 194 students completing their primary and secondary school education in this program. HCE sponsors these students as their parents cannot afford to provide school materials and meals for them.
Asegedech is a widowed mother of five who struggles with a heart condition as well as depression and nerve problems. In order to support her young family, Asegedech has had to resort to begging. Two years ago her twin sons Wondesen Abuye and Zerihun Abuye received a scholarship through HCE to attend kindergarten through the KG project.'I would not be able to send my children to school because I can’t afford to buy uniforms, school materials or make them lunch every day. But after my boys were accepted in the KG project, I no longer needed to worry about any of it.'
Asegedech Meche
Bahiru Sintayehu Werku was born into dire poverty in the slums of Addis Ababa. But his mother, Bezu-Sefer, always dreamed of more for her son. Even though she and her husband did their best to provide for their son, their income was still too little to give him the life they wanted. Then Bahiru was selected to be part of HCE’s KG program. He’s now in his second year and is a bright student who performs well in class. When he grows up Bahiru wants to become a doctor.'I am relieved to know that my child won’t end up like his father and I,' Bezu-Sefer says.
